Description
Woodside Green is a traditional village green, now divided into 3 parts by roads. References to the old hamlet date back to 1662 and the Green is shown on the Croydon Inclosure Map of 1800. In 1870 the north-east part was proposed as a site for a new church but local pressure opposed this and in 1871 the land was granted to Croydon Local Board of Health on condition it was 'forever kept as an open space'. In 1888 the adjacent Poplar Farm was acquired and its land later added to the Green. The Green retains a stone cattle and horse trough, and is bounded by post and rail fencing. The layout has only altered from the late C19th to accommodate road widths and the War Memorial now located at the apex of the Green.

Full description
Woodside Green is a traditional village green, with horse trough, post and rail fencing, and a public footpath running across it. Woodside Green is an old hamlet, referred to in an Indenture of 1662 and the Croydon Inclosure Map of 1800 shows the green. In 1870 the north east part of the site was proposed as a site for a new church by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, but local pressure opposed this, one resident engaging workmen to fill in the ground as fast as it was dug for foundations, as a result of which in 1871 the land was granted by copyhold by the Commissioners to Croydon Local Board of Health on condition it was 'forever kept as an open space and used as, and for, a place of recreation for the use of inhabitants of the parish of Croydon and of the neighbourhood and for no other purpose'. Later in the same year the freehold was conveyed to the Local Board 'freed from all incidents whatsoever of copyhold or customary tenure to be held and used for the purpose of public walks, recreation or pleasure grounds only'. In 1888 the adjacent Poplar Farm was acquired by Croydon and its land was eventually added to the Green.
Boundary trees include mature lime and more recent Tilia cordata 'Green Spire'; low white post and chain surrounds the green, which is divided into 3 parts by roads. In the middle a stone drinking trough that was set up for cattle and horses remains as a feature. A War Memorial is at the apex of the Green with shrub planting carried out in 2001. Although largely surrounded by Victorian and later housing, a few older houses remain, such as the weather boarded houses at no.169 and no. 2, and no. 88 is a mid C19th barge boarded cottage orné. St Luke's Church, built c.1885 is to the north in Woodside Road. In Woodside hamlet there was a racecourse where Croydon races were held from 1864.

Ashburton Park is a municipal park created on the site of an C18th park; the original mansion was built in 1788 but was largely demolished in 1927. Croydon Corporation purchased the site in 1924 and it was first used as a putting green but this was abandoned after a decline in use and it was subsequently re-opened as a public park.
South Norwood Recreation Ground is on a site purchased by Croydon Corporation in 1889, and its facilities included a bandstand, refreshment kiosk, drinking fountain, various sports pitches and a pavilion with changing rooms. A paddling pool and playground were provided in memory of journalist Mr Hall, and the annual village fair attracted crowds. In 1932 Croydon Council purchased adjacent land, some used for allotments until 1949. Today the layout is greatly simplified and there are no longer flower displays but some of the original trees remain.
South Norwood Country Park was created in 1987 on land in the north east of the borough, originally used for agriculture as well as pottery and brickworks. Old maps show there may have been an C18th moated site near the open stream. From 1862 it became Croydon Corporation's sewage farm, with land acquired in a piecemeal fashion until as late as 1951. The sewage works closed in 1967 and the filter beds were dismantled to ground level. The new Country Park sought to preserve the wetlands and developed new meadowlands on areas that had previously been tipped.
